What is adapted education, you ask? How can a student benefit from it? Well, I am going to share it with you. A student with a disability, even those without a key to success in the class, has the appropriate adaptations, accommodations, and modifications to instruction and classroom activities. A simple example of adaptation is moving a student that is being distracted to the front of the class or away from the window. Other modifications can involve changes to how the material is presented or how the students respond to show their learning.
Adaptations must be individualized based on the student's needs, personal learning style, and interests. To adapt instruction a student might need to have changes made in schoolwork or routines due to their disability. Some examples of aids and services that a student might need for adaptation: adapted equipment- a particular seat, a cut-out cup for drinking. assistive technology- special software. Training for staff, students, and/or parents. Peer tutors, one-on-one aid. Adapted materials- books on tape or large print.
