 Episode 1

Research has been done on the inclusion of students with special needs especially those with learning disabilities, and how it effects on the development of children with intellectual disabilities (ID) have been less explored.

A study that examined a group of 34 children with ID fully included in general education classrooms with support and a control group of 34 comparable children in a particular school was done. The progress of the two groups in their academic achievement and adaptive behavior has been compared over two school years. They found that the included children made a little more progress in literacy skills than children attending special schools. No difference was found between the two groups mathematics and adaptive behavior progress.

In conclusion, inclusive education is an appropriate option for students with ID who require extensive support in school.

  1. Inclusion is so important! Not only is it beneficial for student's academic skills and progress, but social emotional development as well! Students can and will learn a lot from each other. Making sure to give everyone the opportunity to learn from each other is extremely important! Inclusion to me falls under the least restrictive environment ideas- which has been proven to be effective and also is a right of every student!
